NCLA sees benefits with C&L
The National Centre for Laser Applications (NCLA) has recently installed two BOGE S15 screw compressors along with a trinity controller in order to meet increased compressed air demand.

The NCLA has recently installed two BOGE S15 screw compressors along with a trinity controller
The NCLA is a laser research facility based in the School of Physics, NUI, Galway. Responsible for conducting research projects into laser technologies, the NCLA develops laser systems which are available to the manufacturing industry and used in the development of innovative products and processes.
A recent expansion of the NCLA, which was enabled through the Inspire (Integrated Nanoscience Platform for Ireland) programme and funded by the Irish government's PRTLI Cycle 4, lead Cormac O'Brien, the Operations Manager at the NCLA, to contact local compressor house C&L Industrial for advice on meeting the larger compressed air demand this expansion would create. As Cormac O'Brien explains "We had been using a BOGE CD7 screw compressor which had been satisfactorily meeting our compressed air needs. However with the expansion of the Department and other Departments also now requiring a supply of compressed air it was clear that the BOGE CD7 would not be able to meet this new level of demand."

Compressed air pneumatically support the optical tables at the NCLA
Compressed air is used to power a number of processes within the NCLA. One critical process is to pneumatically support the optical tables. Compressed air is pumped into the legs to keep the tables, which can hold over two tonnes of equipment, balanced and vibration-isolated. The optical tables must therefore remain stable at all times. If the compressed air system were to fail or the supply was inefficient then the tables would either fall and cause damage to this equipment or provide ineffective vibration isolation. A reliable and efficient compressed air system which produced quality air was therefore critical in developing the new compressed air system.
After reviewing the new air requirements, C&L Industrial recommended replacing the BOGE CD7 with two BOGE S15 screw compressors alongside a trinity controller.
The S15 forms part of the established and award winning BOGE S series screw compressor product range. State-of-the-art technology, a modular design concept and a clever cabinet layout with a high quality finish ensure maximum energy efficiency and high reliability.
The BOGE trinity
is a modern transducer operated changeover switch designed to control up to three compressors. The system automatically sets itself to optimise pressure cascading - only the maximum pressure (Pmax) and the minimum pressure (Pmin) need to be entered into the controller,
trinity takes control
of a compressed air system and ensures that only the compressed air required at any one time is produced. This reduces operating costs as each compressor used is optimised in the most energy efficient way (kW/m3/min). As the NCLA would be running the compressed air system continuously, including a trinity controller would ensure the most cost effective compressor solution.
As the compressed air system must run continuously at the NCLA reliability was crucial. Choosing to have two compressors in the system would not only ensure that peak compressed air demand could be met but that if one compressor were to fail, there would still be a continual supply of compressed air available.
Two BOGE S15 screw compressors and a trinity controller were subsequently installed.
Cormac O'Brien said "Having worked in the industrial sector for many years I had already experienced the BOGE machine in action. Additionally we were already using a BOGE compressor at the NCLA. Although we did look at other manufacturers there really was no choice! Our experience with BOGE and C&L had been excellent and so we had no hesitation in following their recommendations.
The new compressed air system was installed a few months ago and has been operating perfectly in that time providing a reliable supply of quality compressed air."
